Background of the Study
Corporal punishment in schools has been a contentious issue, with debates centering on its effects on students’ behavior and academic performance. In Ilesa East Local Government Area, Osun State, the use of physical punishment as a disciplinary method has drawn criticism from educators, parents, and human rights advocates (Afolabi, 2023). Proponents argue that it maintains order, while opponents contend that it fosters an environment of fear, negatively impacting learning outcomes and overall student well-being (Oluwaseun, 2024). Recent studies suggest that corporal punishment may lead to increased aggression, anxiety, and diminished academic performance (Ogunbiyi, 2025). Despite these concerns, the practice remains prevalent in some schools due to cultural norms and a lack of alternative disciplinary strategies. This study investigates the effects of corporal punishment on both behavior and academic performance in Ilesa East, aiming to provide empirical evidence on its impacts and to propose alternative disciplinary approaches that can foster a more positive learning environment (Adekunle, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Corporal punishment in Ilesa East Local Government Area is associated with negative behavioral outcomes and reduced academic performance among students. The continued use of physical punishment has led to an environment of fear and decreased student engagement. Despite evidence suggesting that such practices are detrimental to learning, they remain widespread due to entrenched cultural beliefs and a lack of effective alternative disciplinary measures. This study seeks to examine the direct effects of corporal punishment on student behavior and academic achievement (Chinonso, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To examine the prevalence and forms of corporal punishment in Ilesa East schools.

  • To assess the impact of corporal punishment on student behavior.

  • To evaluate the relationship between corporal punishment and academic performance.

Research Questions

  • What is the prevalence of corporal punishment in Ilesa East schools?

  • How does corporal punishment affect students’ behavior?

  • What is the relationship between corporal punishment and academic performance?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₁: Corporal punishment has a significant negative effect on student behavior.

  • H₂: There is a significant negative relationship between corporal punishment and academic performance.

  • H₃: The reduction of corporal punishment will lead to improved behavioral and academic outcomes.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical issue of corporal punishment and its adverse effects on students. The outcomes will provide evidence-based recommendations for educators and policymakers to adopt more humane and effective disciplinary strategies (Obi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to examining the effects of corporal punishment on student behavior and academic performance in Ilesa East Local Government Area, Osun State. It does not consider broader societal factors or practices outside the educational sector.

Definitions of Terms
